The Lorin Stained Glass Workshops in Chartres, 1863-1972
Pierre Rosenberg's generous donation to the Musée du Grand Siècle (Saint-Cloud), includes a collection of over 680 Murano glass animals from the 20th century, a lesser-known aspect of his collection.
For about twenty years, Pierre Rosenberg has been gathering a representative collection of whimsical animal figures. His collection reflects his fascination with the humor-tinged talent of glass artists, their sense of form, and their ability to capture or suggest animal behavior. Sometimes seen as minor creations, these pieces give both designers and glassmakers an endless playground, allowing them to fully express their personality as well as their technical and artistic skill.
The donation includes fish designed by the architect Carlo Scarpa or the Primavera fish, a highlight of the collection, from an almost legendary series made from an innovative glass that was never reproduced because it was a happy accident. Nearly half of the donation is made up of birds, reflecting both the collector's taste and the glassmakers' interest in this particular category.
The talk will be led by Virginie Desrante, Chief Heritage Curator, responsible for the collections of sculptures, furniture and art objects.
