The Lorin Stained Glass Workshops in Chartres, 1863-1972
As part of the ongoing effort to preserve the collections of stained glass workshops, the Heritage and Inventory Department of the Centre-Val de Loire Region conducted a study from 2019 to 2023 dedicated to the Lorin stained glass workshops in Chartres, founded in 1863.
The Lorin company is the oldest stained glass business in France still operating in its original premises and the only active stained glass workshop whose buildings are listed as historical monuments. What makes this establishment exceptional is the combined preservation of the original buildings, the equipment related to the stained glass craft, and an extraordinary amount of archival material. The use of this documentation, long inaccessible, now allows us to discover a renowned institution whose many facets were previously unknown. The history and activities of the Lorin family, who worked throughout the world, will be recounted.
