The Charleroi Glass Museum: 50 Years of Promoting Art and Heritage

A little over fifty years ago, the Charleroi Glass Museum opened its doors to showcase the rich glassmaking heritage of its region. Since then, it has developed projects to promote the glass medium, particularly through exhibitions of contemporary artists. The lecture by Catherine Thomas, curator of the museum, will focus specifically on the history of the institution.

Vitrine du musée du verre de Charleroi

Showcase of the Charleroi Glass Museum Young Belgium quickly established itself as a global industrial leader in the 19th century, particularly in the glass industry, with the city of Charleroi as its epicenter. The history of glass in Charleroi, however, goes back much further, as the first glassworks were established in the area as early as the 17th century. It was essential to preserve a record of this fabulous epic, and the presence of a Glass Museum in the area was therefore a given. Founded in 1951, it officially opened its doors to the public in 1973. A privileged space for the encounter between the past and future of glass, it is also the living memory of the history of glass in Belgium. Preserving this history and promoting it are one of the institution's core missions, through a collection of over 6,000 objects and projects to promote the medium through research projects, the promotion of contemporary artists, and an exhibition program illustrating the richness of this medium.
