Jean Luce and the Revival of Table Glassware in France

Jean Luce (1895-1964) played a major role in the modernization of glassware in Paris in the 20th century. He was among the first designers to specialize fully in table glassware, while also designing everyday objects such as bottles, vases, and toiletries.

Jean Luce, Obus vase, sandblasted glass, Saint-Louis crystal factory, circa 1928, Paris, MAD.

This lecture will present the technical innovations that accompanied Jean Luce's aesthetic renewal between 1910 and 1960: from his enamel-decorated glassware in the Art Deco style, to radical functionalism after the Second World War, through a modernist phase in the 1930s, marked by unprecedentedly original sandblasted glass. It will also highlight his production methods and collaborative networks, which stretched from Paris to Czechoslovakia.
